Asterisk Compile

Compile Asterisk

Ok, you have the source code to Asterisk sitting in your /usr/src/asterisk directory. Now what?

cd /usr/src/asterisk
make clean
make
make install

Note: By default, Asterisk runs as the root user. This is a security liability. Consider:

Executable files installed:
  • /usr/sbin/asterisk: The Asterisk daemon that runs your PBX
  • /usr/sbin/safe_asterisk: A shell script to make sure Asterisk keeps on running
  • /usr/sbin/astgenkey
  • /usr/sbin/astman: A very very basic manager interface. See astman for details.

Other directories structures created:
  • /usr/include/asterisk: Contains header files required for building asterisk applications, channel drivers, and other loadable modules.
  • /usr/lib/asterisk: Contains binary objects related to Asterisk which are architecture-specific.
  • /var/lib/asterisk: Contains variable data used by Asterisk in its normal operation.
  • /var/spool/asterisk: Used for runtime spooled files of voicemail, outgoing calls, etc.

Install Configuration Files

Now you are almost ready for configuration. Do this:

cd /usr/src/asterisk
make samples

This will copy a set of sample configuration files to your /etc/asterisk directory.

() If you have existing configuration files in your /etc/asterisk directory, they will be renamed with ".old" appended to their filenames.

You should be able to start Asterisk with no changes needed to the sample configuration files:

Or you may go ahead and start turning all the knobs and pressing all the buttons:

Compilation Notes

VIA ITX mainboards

Asterisk 1.2.x

The VIA would aspire to be a i686, but it is actually a i586 from a compiler standpoint. So with that, you need to make a change to your /usr/src/asterisk/Makefile and change the following:

#ifeq (${OSARCH},Linux)
  1. PROC=$(shell uname -m)
  2. endif
  3. Pentium Pro Optimize
  4. PROC=i686
  5. Pentium & VIA processors optimize
PROC=i586

Make sure that you comment out the ifeq (${OSARCH},Linux) or else when the Makefile is running, it will reset the PROC value from i586 back to i686.

Asterisk 1.4.x

Run configure with the following arguments: "--build=i586 --host=i586".

The above also needs the following addition in the Makefile (or variable defined)

ASTLDFLAGS+=$(LDOPTS) -lpthread -ldl -lresolv

Solaris 8 SPARC

On the prerequirement it is noted to use ginstall for doing "make install" but it is not noted what to do if it is not exist!

Under Makefile.defs

  1. ifeq ($(OS), solaris)
  2. use GNU versions
  3. INSTALL ?= ginstall >> change the following to INSTALL ?= install
  4. TAR ?= gtar
  5. else
  6. INSTALL ?= install
  7. TAR ?= tar
  8. endif

Session Border Controller

$

0
A Session Border Controller is a device used in select VoIP networks to exert control over the signaling and usually also the media streams involved in setting up, conducting, and tearing down calls. The SBC enforces security, quality of service and admission control mechanism over the VoIP sessions.

The Session Border Controller is often installed in a point of demarcation between one part of a network and another. Most Session Border controllers will be installed between peering service provider networks, between the enterprise network and the service provider network, or between the service provider network and residential users.

A Session Border Controller is like a Firewall for VOIP.
They are often configured as a SIP Back-To-Back User Agent (See SIP RFC).

In addition to firewall functions they also may provide services like NAT traversal.

See: NAT and VOIP for more information and watch the video on The Anatomy of Session Border Controllers and To Couple or Decouple Routing Intelligence from SBC.

Martyn Davies of Dialogic discusses Session Border Controllers as the often misunderstood "black magic" application for VoIP networks.

Although carriers often use Session Border Controllers for signal translation and security, most do not include the hardware-based signal processing needed for media transcoding. For all-IP environments, new elements are required that can mediate signaling, transcode among different media formats, and handle basic security issues. The concept of Multimedia Border Element (MMBE) meets these needs.

Cloud PBX

$

0
A cloud PBX system is a based on cloud computing technology, where data is stored and transferred over the Internet, rather than on a computer or piece of hardware that an end-user owns.

Cloud technology that has been around for many years, but has only more recently become popular for consumer use with the introduction of programs like MobileMe and the iCloud, both consumer-based cloud computing technologies.

History of the Cloud

Cloud technology has many applications for businesses and consumers. In the mid-1990’s, companies that had previously used “point-to-point” data circuits to move and store data began to use a cloud technology instead as they found that this was a cheaper way to do the same tasks, and made more efficient use of bandwidth.

The term “cloud” likely refers to the drawings of clouds used by its program developers to represent the abstraction of the Internet. The symbol was used to mark the division between responsibilities of the service provider company and the responsibilities of the customer.

Cloud technology means that you can access the data and services of your cloud from any device connected to the Internet. So, with a cloud PBX provider, you can use all of the standard PBX features without the need of an actual PBX in your home or office.

What is PBX? What is Cloud PBX?

PBX, or public branch exchange, is the name used to refer to the technology that any given telephone provider uses to route calls. Originally, a PBX was a large unit of hardware that had to be stored on site and operated by hand. These machines could be very costly for a company, as they were large, needed special storage facilities, needed regular repairs, and had to be operated manually.

Companies with multiple phones and many employees can’t function properly without some kind of PBX technology in the office. In more recent years, a PBX could be made to operate automatically, without an operator, but even these devices were expensive and complicated (the cheapest are around $400). And if a business needed to move to a new location, or add or remove a phone line, the process could be very costly and time consuming.

Initial cost and upkeep of traditional PBX vs cloud PBX

  • Traditional PBX: About $5,000 including cost of installation and new equipment fees. $10.00/hour for an operator. If managed without an operator, can still run to around $300 or $400 for upkeep and Internet connection.
  • RingCentral Virtual PBX: $19.99/month plus $0.049/additional minute
  • Cebod Telecom: $19.99/month All Inclusive and Unlimited Call
  • Vocalocity Virtual Extension:$14.99/month plus $0.03/additional minute
  • RingOffice Cloud Phone System: Plans from $10/month
  • Switchvox Cloud by Digium: $29/month, unlimited minutes and all UC features included
  • MultiTEL Cloud Hosted PBX— free for up to 5 users, $0.0095 for calls to US/Canada
  • VoIPstudio : A Simple and Powerful Cloud Based Business PBX System. Plans start from $ 4.99/Month

Cloud PBX gives you access to PBX capabilities without the need for complicated and expensive equipment. Cloud PBX is a kind of hosted PBX or virtual PBX, meaning that all of the routing services are performed by your VoIP provider, rather than by an employee managing a PBX system in your office.

How does it work?

All cloud technologies are dependent on the Internet. A cloud PBX works by connecting to your IP, or Internet phone, for its internet connection. So, you must have a VoIP or other IP system in place in your office in order to use a cloud PBX. ...

What Is A Predictive Dialer?

  • "A predictive dialer is a computerized system that automatically dials batches of telephone numbers for connection to agents assigned to sales or other campaigns. Predictive dialers are widely used in call centers." - Wikipedia

"Definitions of Predictive dialer on the Web:

  • A predictive dialer is an outbound call processing system designed to maintain a high level of utilization and cost efficiency in the contact center. VoIP Termination

Please add information to this page about VoIP call termination.

What is VoIP Termination?

VoIP call termination is used to refer to the procedures that are used for routing telephone calls from one provider to the next provider until the call has been routed to the last telephone company and has been received by the recipient. Voice termination is another term that is used for call termination. The telephone companies are also referred to as providers or carriers.

Called Party

The called party is the person who has received the telephone call. The end point of the route may be on the Internet or may be at a point that was reached by routing the call through the public switched telephone network. The procedures for routing the call stop when the call has been received by the recipient. The process may seem simple to individuals who do not experience problems with making telephone calls but is not so simple to individuals who make calls that will not connect such as calls to a different country.

Calling Party

The calling party is the person who has initiated the call and who wants to be connected to the called party. There may be problems with the telephone calls that begin on the Internet and end at a cellular phone. The sound of the voices may seem to be amplified with echoes and have a scratchy quality. The calls that are initiated with Google Voice may never connect or could be delayed.

VoIP

Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is a term that is used to describe a call that was initiated on the Internet such as Skype calls or calls made with Google Voice. The calls that were initiated on the Internet usually end at a point that is not on the Internet. Most of the recipients of telephone calls receive the calls with a landline phone or with a cellular phone. The route may begin on the Internet but will end at a point that was reached by routing the call from the public switched telephone network (PSTN), which is the common description for call termination.

Internet Networks

A tier-one operator is licensed and registered to operate an Internet protocol (IP) network for Internet telephony services. Tier-one operators can handle call origination and call termination. A tier-two operator can lease services from a tier-one operator. The tier-three operators can lease services from either a tier-one or two-two operator. There are also resellers of VoIP services and wholesalers in the market. The quality of the services is not very high because of the inconsistencies in the market such as fluctuations with demand, fraud and problems with doing business on an international level.

Call Origination

Call origination is used to refer to telephone calls that originate from the public switched telephone network and end the route on the Internet. Call termination is considered to be the opposite of call origination because the direction of the paths are reversed. The terms are associated with the starting point of the calls, path of the route of the calls and termination point of the calls. The operators of IP telephony services can handle calls that originate or terminate on the Internet.

Fees

The fees for services are subject to the regulations of several countries because the routes of the calls will cross over more than one country. Those countries can use legislation to control the fees for the services. Termination rates are usually very high for the countries in the Middle East and Asia. The rates are intentional high because there are more incoming calls than outgoing calls from the countries, which is caused by the diaspora effect of a migrating population.

Wholesale VoIP Market:

There is no doubt today that VoIP is taking over the telecom market, and every month increases penetration into services and industries. Competitive carriers are looking at the numerous ways to make money from this exploding technology, but there's a lingering question as to whether it is profitable to deliver VoIP in a wholesale model? Their customers, typically Service Providers, are looking for their ‘competitive advantage' into this ‘lowest price' race, leveraging within three key alternatives for packet telephony : “build” , “buy” or “rent”. Business aspect, there’s no need to invest tens of millions of dollars in wholesale VoIP to join in. Many Telecom Companies have done the work for you. They offer a complete, turnkey VoIP business service and equipment. Now you can start wholesale VoIP business with virtually no investment and yet reap great dividends.

Wholesale VoIP Resellers:

In today’s world, Service providers seeking to deliver VoIP to as wide a customer base as possible may find that becoming a wholesale VoIP reseller is the way to go. Wholesale VoIP may be sold to both other service providers and to enterprises or residential customers.

Reselling IP telephony as a wholesale VoIP company is becoming an increasingly popular business model. For many companies, becoming a wholesale VoIP provider hits the sweet spot between profit and market control. Any firm with a well-established customer base is a good candidate for reselling wholesale VoIP.
Becoming a wholesale VoIP reseller is not a decision that should be taken lightly. It does, however, offer the potential of being very lucrative if done right.

Wholesale Consumer Demand:

An important characteristic of the industry is the complex segmentation of consumer demand and rapid change in the characteristics that are being demanded, both at the end customer and in the intermediate ones (wholesale customers).
Demand coming from ‘packed customers'? will be significantly different of the conventional telecommunications one, were telephony was the unique service to provide and differentiation was based on tariff-distance paradigm, being today's service offerings closer to data applications rather than telephony. Voice communication (and not old POT telephony) becomes the common feature into several communications applications and devices, but not the unique one.
Messaging, conference, collaboration, web contact centres, etc … requires a common communication format between parties, which is voice, implemented through VoIP technologies. Heterogeneous and rapidly changing customer demands and products are important dynamic influences on the evolving structure of the telecom industry, resulting into a new value-chain.
Telecommunication markets evolution will be driven by ‘packed customers' demand rather than networks, technology or finance, changing many decades rules into this industry.

Finance in Telecommunication Industry:

Finance institutions had been influencing Telecomm Industry since the beginning, due the business itself was characterized by huge investments, big market shares and bigger capitalization, influencing in many cases top management, who addressed their strategy towards ‘stock' opportunities rather long term and solid business models. WorldCom crash has been an example of this ‘financial market' pressure and wrong business management.
Today, the networks has been deployed. New scenario in Telecoms enable new players to deploy services over broadband without proprietary network and this new generation business will not be anymore capital intensive, let's say these will be innovation intensive.

U.S. VoIP Market:

The US market for VoIP advanced dramatically in 2006-2007, adding 3.8 million VoIP households in 2006, reports In-Stat: As a result, wholesale VoIP revenues grows quickly, as MSOs, Skype, and a myriad of new entrants most lacking network facilities enter the market and drive demand for telephony features and applications, the high-tech market research firm says.
As retail VoIP expands, wholesale VoIP will accelerate quickly, says Bryan Van Dussen, In-Stat analyst. The largest segment remains international VoIP, but we expect the market for local services to surge from 12% of all revenues to 27% by 2010.
Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

  • Consumer VoIP adoption will drive wholesale VoIP revenues to $3.8 billion by 2010 from $1.1 billion in 2006.
  • In-Stat finds small businesses are driving the growth of hosted services in the U.S. Hosted VoIP seats in the U.S. ...

Important Information to Request from Any Potential VoIP Provider

Before signing a service contract with any business VoIP provider, be sure to request basic service information and practices in writing. You need to be certain of such details as startup costs and monthly fees, any limitations and costs on portable phone numbers and exactly which features are included in the service package you select. You also need to know if international calling is included, charges for adding extra features and the extent of customer care and technical services provided. Also important are such issues as whether your provider offers a money back guarantee and if there are any cancellation fees. It is also helpful to determine prior to signing up for VoIP services if there are any hidden fees assessed by your chosen provider.

Take Full Control and Advantage of Your VoIP System

Once your new business VoIP system and service are in place, you and your staff members will have full-control capabilities for use of your business communications system. Your service provider will ensure connection with your online portal for customizing your telecomm options. These modern digital portals are user-friendly, enabling feature changes and additions to be made for immediate availability. You and your staff can make decisions and changes in real-time that work for you right in the moment.

You can manage your call settings remotely, directing calls to voicemail or having them transferred to another number or extension. You can also make exceptions to any chosen setting in your phone system. For example, if you are expecting an important business call and want to take that call, but hold all other calls for a few hours, you can set your phone to direct only the designated call to ring on your extension. This system allows and encourages you to take complete control of your telecommunications systems and settings so that the service works for your best interests and immediate needs at all times.

Mobile VoIP

Mobile VoIP is an efficient, low-cost way to communicate using your cell phone and the services provided by your home or business VoIP provider.

How Does Mobile VoIP Work?

Mobile VoIP works with a cell phone’s 3G, 4G, GSM, or other Internet service to send voice calls as digital signals over the Internet using voice over IP technology. Mobile VoIP phones can also take advantage of WiFi hotspots to eliminate the calling costs of a cellular voice or data plan.

By using VoIP, mobile VoIP phone users — especially smartphone users — can benefit from lower costs when calling, texting, or other common smartphone activities. Digital data transmission using VoIP is also typically faster, as the data is spread out over multiple packets, each taking the fastest route to its intended destination.

Using a mobile VoIP phone with WiFi hotspot access can also reduce a mobile VoIP phone user's costs by sidestepping the carrier's expensive 3G service altogether. For instance, with a cellular carrier's monthly data plan, callers can easily exceed bandwidth maximums, incurring overage charges. Tapping into WiFi hotspots with mobile VoIP software reduces that risk and extends the lifespan of the monthly data allotment.

A mobile VoIP phone service can eliminate the need for a basic voice plan, as well as optional (and costly) text add-ons. With a mobile VoIP phone, cell phone users can enjoy more flexibility in calling times than a cellular voice plan provides, with fewer restrictions. VoIP mobile phone service means that a mobile VoIP user can make unlimited inexpensive or free calls using voice over IP technology at any time.

Mobile VoIP users don't need to worry about the limitations associated with cell phone calling plans, such as:

  • Anytime minutes
  • Night or weekend minutes
  • Rollover minutes
  • Roaming charges
  • Incoming call charges
  • Messaging limits
  • Mobile-to-mobile calling (check with your mobile VoIP provider, some do treat in-network calls differently)

Mobile VoIP phone users can also take advantage of the additional, integrated features a mobile VoIP app supports. This includes high-bandwidth activities such as group chat and video chat. Accessing these functions without mobile VoIP software (by fring or Talkonaut, for instance), typically requires a separate app, and using it could impact or exceed monthly text and bandwidth maximums.

Accessing Mobile VoIP

Cell phone users can use mobile VoIP service on their phone with the addition of mobile VoIP software. These are apps offered by VoIP phone service providers customers may already be using at home or at work, such as Vonage, or standalone mobile VoIP apps such as Skype, Vyke, or Truphone.

Some services, such as Truphone, also offer an entire mobile VoIP network by combining a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card and an app together. (The SIM card contains all the information needed to identify network subscribers. ...

BULK SMS

Bulk SMS, also known as bulk messaging or bulk text messaging is the act of disseminating SMS messages in large numbers so they are able to be delivered to various mobile phone terminals. This form of messaging is typically utilized by consumer brands, banks, enterprises and media companies. The messages are generally used for mobile marketing, enterprise and entertainment. However, banks often use them for fraud control. For example, if criminals are circulating a fake email that is asking people who have accounts at a certain bank to provide their social security numbers or other confidential information, these text messages can alert people to the scam so they do not fall victim to it. Bulk messaging is often utilized for reminders and alerts. However, it is more frequently used to send communications and information between customers and staff of various companies. Bulk messaging enables the delivery of SMS messages to large numbers of mobile phones that are located all around the world.

Bulk messaging software

In order to receive and send bulk messages, software is needed. There are many types of software packages specifically designed for this task that are available. These packages give their users the ability to send messages to as many phone numbers as they want. There are many different ways in which these phone numbers can be managed.

The vast majority of software applications that are designed to be used with SMS enable the user to upload mobile phone number lists with the use of a CSV or TXT file. Systems that are more advanced are capable of automatically deleting any numbers that are repeated. There are also systems that can be programed to validate all of the mobile phone numbers before the messages are sent to them.

Enhanced software features are also currently available that allow users to schedule messages to be delivered at certain days and/or times. Bulk messages are also able to be sent on mobile networks that are international or national, assuming that the provider of the bulk messaging software sends internationally.

Bulk messaging portal

Bulk messaging features can be added to websites through the use of this specific online script. Unlimited mobile phone numbers can be added to the list of numbers to send messages to. There are a wide variety of ways that can be used to manage these numbers.

Bulk messaging API

The majority of services that handle bulk messaging use the API's (Application Programming Interface) listed below. These enable the addition of functionality to programs by their programmers:

  • Email
  • HTTP
  • SMPP (Short Message Peer to Peer)
  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

Immediate benefits of using bulk SMS messaging

When a particular business is not doing well financially, they need to utilize various tools that can help them gain a competitive advantage in their specific industry. One of the main reasons that bulk SMS is so popular is its ability to lower operational costs while also generating revenue at the same time. Bulk SMS might be the only medium that is able to show a return on investment that is able to be measured. Wholesale SMS messaging is targeted, which makes it extremely effective at getting people to respond and generate revenue.

Reduces operational costs

Bulk SMS message transmission is more effective than email and less expensive than voice calls. There are thousands of businesses located all around the globe that utilize wholesale SMS as a way to communicate with their suppliers, employees and customers. There is a significant cost savings as a result of time being saved because actual voice calls to suppliers, employees and customers do not need to be made. A single message can instantly be sent to many people at the same time, as long as the person is located in an area with mobile coverage. The ability to disseminate information so quickly to a large target audience reduces communication costs while also generating revenue if used for marketing purposes.

Allows customers to be accessed easily

More people have mobile phones than have access to email or landline phones. Every mobile phone supports the use of text messaging. All mobile phone users are comfortable using this technology because it is simple and easy to understand. This makes wholesale SMS the perfect medium to use for communication with customers. There are also no demographical or geographical restrictions. ...
