  • 01/24/17--04:23: QueueMetrics Live
  • QueueMetrics-Live is a cloud solution (SaaS) that turn an existing Asterisk-based PBX into a full-fledged call-centre powered by QueueMetrics. It tracks over 150 metrics of inbound/outbound activities (calls, traffic, sessions) without upfront expenses for the deployment. A company can choose the service required and pay only for what is needed, included:

    - Supports to up 50 agents, on unlimited queues and campaigns
    - Compatible with any Asterisk distribution and configuration, including embedded systems
    - Compatible with FreePBX, Elastix, and Yeastar appliances
    - Localized in multiple languages (~20 at the moment)
    - Single and multiple reporting for queues/campaigns
    - Weekly activity breakdown in days or hours
    - Business targets measurement against SLAs
    - Staff performance analysis on ACD/non-ACD activities
    - Customizable QA forms for custom call grading
    - Detailed real-time activity reporting with definable alarms
    - Real-time Wallboard
    - Agent panel for call control, disposition, log-on and pause
    - Embedded screen-pops to your favourite CRM system
    - Restricted Visitor mode for external inspection

    and much more.

The main advantage of an hosted SaaS solution is that operations can be easily scaled up or down by taking online resources following only the call-center needs. Also the required IT infrastructure is provided and hosted by the developer (Loway), so there are administration costs.
The customer accesses the service via secure SSL connection and the Loway does all the maintenance, updates and nightly backups, freeing the customers' time and resources for other tasks.
QueueMetrics Live is offered with a 30-day money back guarantee that includes remote installation.

QueueMetrics-Live can create reports split per agent, queue and timing, with many different levels of aggregation.
A wallboard showing what's happening within the call-center (queues, agents available, who's talking to whom) can be generated from real-time data.
Agents have their home panels to see and handle calls, track their pauses for their non-ACD time, and an embedded WebRTC soft-phone.

QueueMetrics-Live also offers Quality Assessment data input and reporting, can be launched very quickly and it’s ideal for companies ready to offload on-premise solutions in order to create new revenue streams integrating full-service contact centers.

  • 01/24/17--13:58: Asterisk fxotune
  • fxotune

A utility for tuning the various settings on the fxo modules for analog cards.
Supported by Digium TDM400P and clones, TDM800P, TDM2400P, Xorcom Astribank FXO modules and probably some others. Not supported by X100P cards and clones.

fxotune tunes the module to generate less echo in the first place.

    Using Fxotune

You need to train fxotune once using fxotune -i, see more below about that. The training will create the file /etc/fxotune.conf . In order to apply the same tuning next time, you need to run:

    fxotune -s

after you have loaded the zaptel modules, but before you started Asterisk. Latest Zaptel init script should do that if /etc/fxotune.conf is present.

    Fxotune Training

    Zaptel 1.2

The version of fxotune included with zaptel 1.2 has a rather simple syntax. It is also slower and less effective than the version in 1.4.
    1. Stop asterisk
    2. Run: fxotune -i 4
    3. Restart asterisk

Asterisk must be stopped or otherwise fxotune would consider the line as busy (in fact, you could instead destroy the relevant zaptel channels, and restart asterisk in the end of the tuninng).

    Zaptel 1.4

The rest of the page applies to the version of fxotune from zaptel 1.4 or newer.

    From README.fxotune

    Q. I have echo problems on my FXO modules and I've tried the different echo cancellation algorithms in zconfig.h, tried tweaking the gains, and still nothing works. What can I do?

    A. Use the fxotune utility.

    To use:
Just run the fxotune utility with the -i option. (`fxotune -i 4`) It should discover which zap channels are FXO modules and tune them accordingly. Be warned however, it takes a significant amount of time for EACH module to test, I would say somewhere around 2-3 minutes. But you only have to initialize it once for the line. It will write a configuration file to /etc/fxotune.conf. You will need to have your system run fxotune with the -s flag (`fxotune -s`) to set the module with the previously discovered values from fxotune.conf for it to take affect, so essentially if each time you reboot the machine you need to run `fxotune -s`. You might consider putting it in your startup scripts some time after the module loads and before asterisk runs.

NOTE: The digit after the -i option is the digit that will break dialtone on the line.

    Matthew Fredrickson

    Notes

Basically make sure asterisk isnt running and that zaptel and wctdm modules are loaded as fxotune needs direct access to the zap channel

    In other words:
    1. amportal stop (Asterisk@Home)
    or
    CLI>stop now (just Asterisk)
    followed by
    1. /usr/src/zaptel/fxotune -i 4

    More info on fxotune:

fxotune optimizes the line characteristics of a TDM device to minimize the *source* of echo. This is generally referred to as 'balancing the hybrid' and is quite important in echo cancellation. Once the hybrid is properly balanced, software echo cancellers will work very nicely. To provide some hard numbers, the echo on lines at one site was about 15% with the default settings on the TDM. The software echo canceller actually did a fairly good job with this - but when we got the hybrid balanced properly, echo on the line dropped to 3%, and then the software echo canceller did a *fantastic* job. At another site, the echo on the line was 60% - this was well beyond what the software echo canceller could handle (it did work, but there was quite a bit of residual echo, etc...). Once we tuned the hybrid, echo dropped to 4%, and the echo canceller was able to work properly.

Note that fxotune does not do anything with the echo canceler algorithms themselves - instead, it optimizes the signal before it gets to the echo canceler, making it easier for the echo canceler to do it's work.

There are two types of tuning that can be performed on the TDM - adjusting line impedence, and adjusting echo coefficients in the digital filter that is part of the hybrid iteself. The current implementation of fxotune *only* balances the line impedence (which does not necessarily result in the best results). ...

  • 01/25/17--16:52: Asterisk RealTime
  • The Asterisk RealTime Architecture

ARA, the Asterisk Realtime Architecture is one of the major new features in Asterisk version 1.2.

    Background Information

    From docs/README.extconfig

The Asterisk external configuration engine is the result of work by Anthony Minessale II, Mark Spencer and Constantine Filin It is designed to provide a flexible, seamless integration between Asterisk's internal configuration structure and external SQL other databases (maybe even LDAP one day).

External configuration is configured in /etc/asterisk/extconfig.conf allowing you to map any configuration file (static mappings) to be pulled from the database, or to map special runtime entries which permit the dynamic creation of objects, entities, peers, etc. without the necessity of a reload.

    Olle explains the world

In the new RealTime architecture, all database specific code is moved to database specific drivers. The channel just calls a generic routine to do database lookup. Much cleaner, simpler and manageable from a coding standpoint.

The database is accessed with three functions:
    • STATIC: This is used to load static configuration when a module is loaded
    • REALTIME: This is used to lookup objects during a call (or another event)
    • UPDATE: This is used to update objects

The database support in the channel is not changed. There are "normal" static peers/users and database peers/users. The static ones, regardless if these are loaded from a text file or a database configuration, are kept in-memory and in the SIP channel we provide them with NAT traversal support and message waiting indication if needed.

The database peers/users are not kept in memory. These are only loaded when we have a call and then deleted, so there's no support for NAT keep-alives (qualify=) or voicemail indications for these peers.
NOTE: If you enable RealTime caching in your sip.conf, Voicemail MWI works and so does 'sip show peers' - see rtcachefriends=yes. The downside to this is that if you change anything in the database, you need to do a 'sip reload' (for major changes) or 'sip prune realtime PEERNAME' (for single peer changes) before they become active.

    In laymans terms

In the Stable 1.0.X branch of Asterisk, database storage of configuration files and parameters was done mostly by hardcoding connection and query code directly into the application. The best example of this is in app_voicemail, where you can see MySQL code and PostgreSQL code all meshed with the app_voicemail code.

This method of database retrevial proves to be ugly as all the asterisk code is now crammed with database specific code that is irrelevant to the function of the application at hand. Thus RealTime was developed as a means to remove the code and replace it with a unified (abstracted) database retrevial method.

    Terminology/Files

    • Driver - A compiled module containing database specific code that accepts the generalized function calls that RealTime makes. As of this writing, only ODBC, MySQL (via asterisk-addons) and LDAP (see http://free.oxymium.net/Asterisk/ and http://bugs.digium.com/view.php?id=5768) drivers are available.
    • Family - A name associated with a RealTime call. Examples: sippeers, sipusers, voicemail.
    • extconfig.conf - The configuration file that contains the information necessary to bind specific families to specific drivers.
    • res_odbc.conf - The configuration file for ODBC RealTime.
    • res_mysql.conf - The configuration file for MySQL RealTime.
    • res_ldap.conf - The configuration file for LDAP RealTime.
    • ODBC -
